For couples who want more than a view.
You’ve probably seen the iconic Banff elopement locations — Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Peyto Lake. And while they’re beautiful… they’re also busy.
If you’re dreaming of something more adventurous, more intimate, and a little less expected — Tent Ridge might be exactly what you’re looking for.
Located in Kananaskis, just outside Banff, Tent Ridge is one of the most iconic ridge hikes in the area — known for its sweeping views, exposed ridgeline, and the feeling that you’ve truly earned the moment.
This isn’t the easiest place to elope.
But for the right couple, it’s unforgettable.
Where is Tent Ridge?

Tent Ridge is located in Kananaskis Country, along the scenic Spray Lakes Road, right between the Smutwood hike and Mount Shark area.
It’s about:
- 1 hour from Canmore
- 1.5 hours from Banff
- ~1.5 to 2 hours from Calgary (depending on traffic and road conditions)
The trailhead is accessed via the Smith-Dorrien / Spray Trail (742) — a gravel road that winds through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Canadian Rockies.
The drive itself already feels like part of the adventure.
Why Elope on Tent Ridge
Tent Ridge is not just about the view — it’s about the experience getting there.
- 360° mountain views along the ridge
- Overlooks the stunning Spray Lakes Valley
- Feels wild and immersive
- Less “touristy” than Banff lakes
- A true shared adventure
Unlike classic elopement locations where you step out of the car… This is something you do together

Who This Is Perfect For
Tent Ridge is perfect for couples who:
- Love hiking or want an adventure elopement
- Are okay with a bit of challenge
- Want something unique and intentional
- Prefer experience over convenience
It’s probably NOT for you if:
- You want easy access
- You’re bringing guests with limited mobility
- You want a quick, low-effort ceremony

Tent Ridge Hike Overview
- Distance: ~10–11 km loop
- Elevation gain: ~750–800 m
- Time: 4–6 hours
- Difficulty: Moderate to challenging (with scrambling sections)
- Trail type: Loop
This is a physical hike with steep sections, loose terrain, and a few hands-on scrambling moments — part of what makes it so rewarding.
The thing about Tent Ridge though is that you actually don’t have to do the full loop to get to the top.
Most of the times, we just do the last section up and then down. It takes about 1h30 to 2h to get to the ridge that way and then it is a bit quicker on the way down.
This is the best scenario for sunrise elopements. If you wanted to do the full loop and/or do sunset, we could do the full loop during the day and finish at sunset on the main ridge.
What an Elopement Day on Tent Ridge Looks Like
Sunrise Elopement (Out & Back)
- One way up and down (no full loop)
- Early start with headlamps
- Getting ready in the dark
- Quiet ridge, soft morning light
- A much more private experience
Fewer hikers choose sunrise — it’s often just you (and maybe other eloping couples or photographers)
Sunset Elopement (Full Loop)
- Hike up during the day (complete the full loop)
- Golden hour along the ridge
- Epic light over Spray Lakes
- Finish the hike with headlamps after sunset
More people on the trail earlier in the day, but it quiets down later
Best Time of Year to Elope on Tent Ridge
June: Tent Ridge is often prone to have snow later in the year and as it is an avalanche area, I would not recommend trying to go in June. Spray Lakes might also still have some ice on it.
July – August: Green alpine landscapes. Beautiful color on the lake.
End of September: Golden larches (most popular time). Just stunning with larches.
October: Quiet, moody, fewer people BUT could be covered in snow already
Best overall season: July to September

Important Things to Know Before attempting Tent Ridge
- There are scrambling sections (hands required)
- The ridge is exposed to wind and weather (always check conditions before heading out)
- It’s a popular hike — expect people, especially on weekends
- Weather changes quickly in the mountains
- This is grizzly bear habitat → carry bear spray and know how to use it
- The ridge is very exposed → if you have a fear of heights or vertigo, this may feel intense
Early starts = best experience because you won’t feel rushed if you don’t feel comfortable.
And if you’re not sure whether Tent Ridge is the right fit for you — I help couples choose locations that match their comfort level, vision, and how they want their day to feel.
Permits & Logistics
- Kananaskis Conservation Pass required (per vehicle)
- No official ceremony permit required for small elopements (less than 20 people)
- Parking is roadside and fills up quickly
What to Wear for a Tent Ridge Elopement
This is where practicality matters:
- Hiking boots or trail shoes
- Bear Spray
- Head Lamps
- Layers (it gets windy -and cold- on the ridge)
- Pack your outfit or wear a flexible one
- Bring a warm jacket — even in summer
- Gloves, hats and heated pads are always nice – especially if you reach the ridge in the dark and need to wait a bit for the sun to show up
NB: Flowy dresses work beautifully here — just expect movement from the wind
Why This Location Feels Different
Most elopements are about showing up somewhere beautiful. Tent Ridge is about getting there together.
It starts before the ceremony — in the quiet of the trail, in the steady rhythm of your steps, in the little moments where you check in with each other and keep going.
It becomes a quiet reflection of what’s ahead — not just this day, but everything after it. There will be challenges, unknowns, moments that ask more of you than expected. But it’s never really about how steep the climb is. It’s about how you move through it together.
Not rushed. Not crowded. Just the two of you, fully present in it.
By the time you reach the ridge…
It’s not just about the view anymore.
It’s about everything it took to get there — together.
If you’re dreaming of an elopement that feels like an experience — not just a location — Tent Ridge might be exactly what you’re looking for.
I help couples plan and document adventure elopements like this from start to finish — including logistics, timelines, and making the whole day feel effortless.
